Family
Services offers support services to enable
families to work and meet their basic needs. These include child day care, Work First employment services,
medical transportation, emergency assistance, county general
assistance, fuel assistance, and other crisis
intervention services.
Using State and Federal funds, the Dare County Department of Social Services provides financial assistance for child care to those families who qualify.
Work First Employment Services

Employment services are provided to recipient's of Work First Family Assistance (formerly AFDC) when the parent is included in the grant. The goal of this welfare reform program is to move families from dependence on public assistance to economic self-sufficiency as quickly as possible. Support provided includes evaluation of job skills and areas of interest, education and vocational training, day care for the children, help with the cost of transportation to work, and assistance with job search and job retention and any other needs that are barriers to work.
The involvement and support of the business, faith, and educational communities is essential to the success of Work First. The employment services social worker is available to make presentations to groups in the community.

A wide variety of services are identified and accessed for clients experiencing financial or other crises at services intake. Resources available include transportation for medical and some other essential needs , county General Assistance, Work First Emergency Assistance, the Crisis Intervention Program, Energyshare, Emergency Food and Shelter, food pantries, and other funds donated for special purposes. Clients must have low income to qualify and it is the intent of these programs to help those with the most serious need. Service requests are accepted in person or by phone. Typical clients may have received an eviction notice or a utility cut-off notice, may be homeless, or may be in need due to a chronic illness or substance abuse problem.

If you are experiencing a problem pregnancy or have decided to limit your family size, we may be able to help you with family planning services. Educational material and counseling are provided, and we may be able to help you locate the medical resources that you need.
